The Fancy Bio
Coach.
Writer.
Entrepreneur.
My name is Josh Martin and I help business owners take the action they need in order to be the family leader they long to be.
My thesis is this: if you sacrifice your family at the altar of your business, the former won’t last very long or be fruitful. I work with action oriented business owners to reprioritize what matters most to them, without losing what provides their livelihood.
The Real Bio
My name is Josh Martin and I’m an incredibly blessed husband to Mandy and dad to Jesse and Quinn. I’m not perfect, I love people, and trust God. Born in Kansas City, I’ve lived in Florida since I was three. I love nothing more than hiking to all the amazing waterfalls around Asheville, NC with my family. I am a huge car enthusiast and fan of the Florida Gators. I believe in loving big, laughing loud, and living fully.
After high school (any fellow IB nerds reading this?!), I attended the University of Florida to pursue a degree in exercise science. My first year, on a chance visit home, I stopped by a place in town that my younger brother was training at called ‘Velocity Sports Performance.’ I fell in love with strength and conditioning right then and there. Back at school, I took every opportunity I could to learn more about the field. The highlight? Working with the Florida Gator football team. Once I graduated from UF, I embraced the role of “coach” in a couple of really cool places:
- Performance Specialist at IMG Academies
- Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the New York Yankees
Call it youthful stubbornness, or something else, it was my tenure with the Yankees that soured me in the profession for a short time. So, I became an Operations Manager for a wholesale distribution company for several years. However, I still coached in my free time because I just loved it. In 2011, I stumbled onto a small blog called dontbuyads.com that gave me the confidence to go out on my own and open my gym ‘Coaching For Glory.’
It was inside those four walls that the word “coach” took on a much deeper meaning to me, far beyond what health and fitness provided. I found myself talking with people more about what was going on in their lives and less about exercise selection and macronutrients. This was the type of coaching that actually got them the results they desired.
I believe so much in coaching that I hired my own business coach, Chris Cooper of Two-Brain Business. As luck would have it, I was invited to join the team at TBB in 2017 and I still work there to this day where our mission is to help gym owners achieve wealth.
While helping owners turn their businesses around, I realized something – as we swung the pendulum back towards great business operations, it swung away from great service delivery. Put another way – the quality of coaching had diminished, so Chris and I started Two-Brain Coaching, which rebranded to The Refined Art of Coaching in 2022.
So what do I do and why are you here? Simple – I’m a coach, through and through. While my bio reads heavily in the health and fitness space, for the last 22 years there have been four coaching principles I’ve used that translate universally, across business and life:
- Step 1 -> Learn: You want to achieve an outcome, so we measure where you are now.
- Step 2 -> Design: We create a plan that meets you where you are, focusing on where you want to go, using the resources you have.
- Step 3 -> Deliver: You take the necessary action and achieve success.
- Step 4 -> Refine: You make small refinements over time for sustained benefit.
In my own coaching practice, I work with business owners that want to ensure they’re not leaving their family on the sideline while they achieve success for their bottom line.
I do this by providing content that educates, challenges, and entertains, with mentoring that personally connects you with action.
